The European Commission published a new €230 million Horizon Europe call, “Transformative change towards a nature-positive economy and society”, to raise biodiversity spending across Pillar II of the 2026–2027 work programme.
Its ten topics include the effects of PFAS on biodiversity and ecosystem services, invasive species and cost-effective biodiversity monitoring. Most topics close on 14 January 2027.
A separate €50 million innovation action for a stronger Global Ocean Observing System closes on 16 February 2027.
Why it matters
Biodiversity is no longer a niche for environmental research groups: topics on PFAS, monitoring and invasive species open the door to companies working on sensors, environmental data and analytical services. With most deadlines in mid-January, consortia that are not already formed need to start partner search now.
